Fish houses, ice houses, wheel houses…. they can range in price from $300 to $30,000. Everyone’s is different – and fish house coverage needs can vary!
I know several die-hard fishermen that live and work in Northern Minnesota. We insure many of you. (Thank you!) Each year, we get several calls both notifying us about a new fish house, or asking us about insurance coverage … for the “what ifs.”
Let’ Start With The Two Basic Coverage Options:
- Add it to your home insurance as a scheduled item for a specific value and with a separate deductible. This can be a very affordable option. However, not all companies will allow this. Additionally, contents would be subject to your personal property policy deductible.
- Add it to your auto policy as a recreation trailer. You would list it for a specific value and have a comprehensive and collision deductible. This can also be a very affordable option. Again, contents would not be covered.
What If My Fish House Falls Through The Ice?
While both of these options would cover damage to the fish house, the insurance carrier generally WILL NOT cover retrieval if it falls through the ice. As most fishermen know, this can be very costly.
So can we buy insurance coverage for retrieval? Yes! Generally, buying a specialty policy for your fish house will cover damage to the house, retrieval and you can even buy coverage for your contents and fishing equipment. These specialty policies may cost you more than the above options, but when looking at the additional coverage you will have, it may be worth the additional premium to protect the financial investment you have in your fish house.

As always, we suggest you give us a call to discuss your particular options based on your insurance company. That is why we are here!
Happy Fishing!
